So much for the sewing room

Until we get an outbuilding constructed, I’m going to have to have my home office in, well, my home. So far, the only place that’s really amenable to that is what was, to the previous owners, a well appointed sewing room. I’d much rather not work from home in the home because it’s an entirely different mind-set (and also because I need a quiet, secluded space, to swear at my computer for failing to read my mind), but for now, this’ll do.

Because the previous owners left a ton of stuff here in the sale, this room required some serious cleanup. In the closets there were scads of different fabrics, boxes of patterns and other sewing paraphernalia, as well as random stuff like shoes and fake flowers. We found a couple of books – The Joy of Sex, and The Sensual Woman (both, amusingly, bought in the name of the husband out of the previous owners) – which we thought were adorable. It was dusty, it was a big mess, but somehow we both managed to work in there cleaning it up at the same time without murdering one another.

There was a gigantic homemade sewing table in there which was relatively easy, fortunately, to take apart. I replaced it with a Bekant sit/stand desk from IKEA – that thing is lovely, and it’ll keep me moving a bit when I do work from home. Coupled with a FitCycle (under desk pedaling thing), I can be active while deep in programming mode.

Once we finished all of this we felt – rightly! – very accomplished, and immediately proceeded to waste the rest of the night drinking and watching Hulu. One room down, something like a dozen left to go.
